Existing media
From the three magazines that I have researched, Fader, Vibe and Clash, it is clear to see that there are some common trends used throughout all three of the magazines in terms of layout and style etc. High key lighting is usually used to highlight a mid or close up shot of the artist along side direct mode of address. I want to use these in my magazine as high key lighting makes the image stand out againt a darker background and is eye catching to the audience. Direct mode of address develops a personal connection between the artist and the reader (uses and grat theory), attracting them to the magazine. I would also like to use a close-up shot as it makes the cover of the magazine very visual and means the facial expressions are very clear. The image is usually the main focus of the magazine covers, each of these having little font or titles on them. I like the idea of a minimalistic cover as it shows the focus is on the artist.
The contents pages are typically image orientated, with different sections of the magazine seperated clearly to show a difference in content. I would like to use this in my magazine as it gives a very organised effect and makes the layout of the magazine clear and easy to understand for the reader.
Double page spreads tend to have a page solely for an image of the featured artist, whilst the text itself is printed into columns onto a white background so it can be easily read, with drop capitals used to attract the reader's eye to the paragraphs and make them more interesting. I will use this when making my double page spread so that it is clear yet attracting and interesting to the reader.
